This weeks Church History lesson discussion

A few weeks ago we talked about the Crusades in a video based study that we are doing at Church. One lady asked me about how they got started. I wish I had read this weeks lesson before that class. Many important lessons are extracted from the “what went wrong” category concerning the Crusades. The first thing that got my attention is how, seemingly, they started out with good intentions, but went horribly wrong, especially by the fourth Crusade. When I read that it was in that Crusade that they “sacked” Constantinople, all I could think was: what were you thinking !? Noll pointed out, “[the Crusades] remained a festering memory that poisoned communications between parts of the Christian church for many centuries to come, perhaps even to this day.”(pg. 142).

A personal lesson for me and my ministry in this is that, even though I might start out focused on God and abiding in Him to guide my ways in an endeavour, it is incredibly important to stay close to God as events unfold. Remain focused on Jesus and “what would Jesus do?” Stay in the Word and on my knees. If I don’t do this, I can stray from even the most worthy of callings. Proverbs 3:5-7 comes to mind.

Blessings!
George
